Follow these steps to troubleshoot Copilot missing in Excel and other Microsoft 365 apps:

    1. Confirm the license really supports Copilot
      • Copilot in the desktop apps requires a license that supports Microsoft 365 Copilot.
      • Ask the Microsoft 365 admin to verify that the account is assigned a license that supports Microsoft 365 Copilot and that Copilot is not blocked by organizational policies.
    2. Refresh the license in the apps
      • On Windows (any Office app such as Excel/Word):
        1. Open Excel.
        2. Go to File > Account.
        3. Check Product Information and confirm you are not on Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel (see step 3 below).
        4. Close and reopen the app after any license changes.
      • On Mac (any Office app):
        1. Open Excel.
        2. Select Excel > About Excel.
        3. Select More Info….
        4. Select Refresh License.
        5. Close all Office apps and reopen them.
    3. Make sure the update channel supports Copilot (business users on Windows)
      • Copilot features are not available on Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel.
      • To check:
        1. Open Excel (or Word/PowerPoint).
        2. Go to File > Account.
        3. In Product Information, look for the update channel. If it shows Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel, the device must be moved to Current Channel or Monthly Enterprise Channel by the IT/admin team.
      • Until the channel is changed, Copilot will not appear in the desktop apps, but the web versions of the apps can be used.
    4. Check privacy settings (Copilot can be hidden if these are off)
      • On Windows:
        1. Open Excel.
        2. Go to File > Account.
        3. Under Account Privacy, select Manage Settings.
        4. Turn on Experiences that analyze your content.
        5. Scroll down and turn on All connected experiences.
      • On Mac:
        1. Open Word (same settings apply across apps).
        2. Go to Word > Preferences > Privacy.
        3. Turn on Experiences that analyze your content.
        4. Turn on All connected experiences.
    5. If Copilot is still missing or disabled
      • Follow the full checklist in How to find and enable missing Copilot button in Microsoft 365 apps.
      • If the issue persists after that:
        • For business users: contact the Microsoft 365 admin to confirm the license, update channel, and that Copilot is not blocked by policy; the admin can then contact Microsoft Support.
        • For home users: if everything above is correct and Copilot still does not appear, contact Support for further assistance.

Note: Newly assigned or changed licenses can take some time to propagate. During that period, Copilot may not appear even if the license looks correct.
