Syncing problems with Onenote Desktop

My main notebook suddenly started getting a weird syncing error just on my OneNote desktop app. (Weird in the sense that I had never seen that particular error and also that changes were syncing even though I was warned that they were not.) I tried closing and re-opening the notebook to fix the issue, but now my desktop app cannot open the notebook. So I can only edit my notebook via my cellphone, iPad or browser.

Other relevant info:

  • The notebook is showing up in my OneDrive as an "Internet Shortcut"
  • I cannot save a new notebook to my OneDrive from my OneNote Desktop app. I get the following error message, none of which should apply in my case: User's image I've tried resetting OneDrive and also logging out of Onedrive and back in again.

Your New screen only shows local paths. Go to File > Account > Add a service, add your OneDrive account again, then restart OneNote and return to File > New where your OneDrive should now appear as an option at the top. Double check that please.

Thanks for the update. Now close OneNote, then press Windows key + R, type %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneNote, delete the 16.0 folder, reopen OneNote and sign in again.

Reopen your notebook, go to File > Open and select your notebook from the OneDrive list instead of clicking the shortcut in File Explorer.

I see, do you see the notebook as a folder or just an Internet Shortcut in OneDrive web? Go to OneDrive web, open Documents, create a new notebook using New > OneNote notebook, open it fully in the browser first, then open OneNote desktop and go to File > Open and select it from your OneDrive list, do not use any shortcut or browser button, this will connect the desktop app to a real notebook file and fix the open and sync issue.

Is your OneDrive storage location a personal and not a shared or moved folder?

    Hello,

Are you able to open other notebooks in your desktop app without issues?

In OneNote desktop go to File > Account and sign out of all accounts, close OneNote, then reopen and sign in again, after that go to File > Open and choose the notebook from your OneDrive list instead of using the browser button, and if it still shows as an Internet Shortcut delete that shortcut in OneDrive web and create a new notebook directly in OneDrive, then open it from OneNote which will rebuild the connection and fix the sync and open issue.
