For a Microsoft 365 Family digital purchase, the full product key usually is not needed to retrieve or use the subscription.
Use these steps to get or activate the subscription:
- Check the type of offer on the new PC
If the PC shows a “Let’s get started” screen with options to try, buy, or activate Microsoft 365, that typically indicates a 1‑month trial of Microsoft 365 Family that came preinstalled, not a full product key from the PC manufacturer. In that case, use a Microsoft account to start the trial or purchase/activate the subscription rather than looking for a printed key.
- If a Microsoft 365 product was included with the PC
When a paid Microsoft 365 product is bundled with a new Windows PC, a digital product key is transmitted to the PC when Windows is activated. No printed key is provided. When starting Word or another Microsoft 365 app, a message should appear indicating that Office came with the device and can be activated by signing in. Use the Microsoft account intended for this subscription to complete activation.
- If a separate product key card was purchased
If the purchase was actually a product key card and only part of the key is visible on the receipt:
- Check the physical card itself. Many cards have a silver foil coating on the back that must be carefully scratched off to reveal the full key in the format
XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX.
- If the key area on the card is damaged or unreadable but there is valid proof of purchase (your receipt and transaction details), Microsoft support may be able to replace the product key or offer other options. Use the official support channel to request help.
- If the product key is lost or incomplete
- Product keys for Microsoft 365 are not shown online for consumer subscriptions, so the missing part cannot be looked up directly on the web.
- With valid proof of purchase (transaction number, receipt serial number, and date), contact Microsoft support and provide these details so they can review options to recover or replace the entitlement.
- If the subscription was redeemed to a Microsoft account
If the key was already redeemed, the subscription is tied to a Microsoft account, not to the key itself. Sign in to the Microsoft account, Services & subscriptions page with the same Microsoft account used at redemption to view and manage the Microsoft 365 Family subscription and reinstall/activate it on devices.
If none of the above resolves the issue, use the Microsoft support page and share your purchase date, transaction number, and receipt serial number so support can assist with recovering the subscription or product key.
