To completely remove McAfee from a Windows 11 PC, use both the normal uninstall method and then the dedicated McAfee cleanup tool.
- Uninstall McAfee from Windows
- Select Start > Settings > Apps.
- In Installed apps, find any McAfee products.
- Select each McAfee entry and choose Uninstall.
- Follow the on‑screen steps and restart the PC if prompted.
While McAfee is being removed, the PC may be temporarily unprotected. Before uninstalling, make sure Windows Firewall is enabled and that Microsoft Defender Antivirus will be active afterward.
- Use the McAfee removal tool (MCPR)
Some security programs do not uninstall completely using Apps settings alone. McAfee provides a dedicated cleanup tool to remove remaining components:
- Go to the McAfee Consumer Products Removal tool (MCPR.exe) page:

- Download MCPR.exe and run it.
- Follow the prompts to remove all McAfee products.
- Restart the PC when the tool finishes.
- Confirm protection with Microsoft Defender
After removal:
- Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Security.
- Open Virus & threat protection and confirm Microsoft Defender Antivirus is on.
- Ensure Firewall & network protection shows the firewall as On.
- Make sure Tamper Protection is turned on to prevent unwanted changes to security settings.
If McAfee still appears or causes issues after these steps, contact McAfee support using the information on the MCPR page.
