Issue with using a Style

I'm using Styles so I can add an updatable TOC. Why does this happen when I need to make a formatting change to a word/phrase? In this instance, I need "source" to be in italics. The person I work for won't like it if this shows in the document when opened, even though it does not print - I can't leave the "Show/Hide" (which I use frequently as you can see in the screenshot) on when I send documents.

It sounds like the Style is set to update base on direct formatting changes made where it is applied in the document content. In the definition of your Style confirm that the box is not checked for Automatically Update. You'll also need to restore the original specifications of the Style.

By way of explanation: If that box is checked any direct changes to a passage where the Style is used will cause updating of the Style & all instances will be updated accordingly.

If you change a single word in a heading to italics, that formatting will be reproduced in the table of contents (see the example in the screen shot below). Is this what you are concerned with? Or is it something else that produces an unexpected result in your table of contents? Please clarify, including a couple of screen shots if appropriate.
