Outlook not updating to the current storage usage/quota

If none of the suggestions offered correct the problem, this may be a known bug. Microsoft has acknowledged that there is a problem and is working on a fix.

    https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/questions/5837950/outlook-storage-limit-not-updating-after-upgrade

The Question is about a quota change after an upgrade. But the problem also shows up after just clearing out storage. In both cases Outlook does not update to the actual free space available.

The Outlook Team says that the fix is rolling out and is expected to be complete in the next 24 hours.

There is no external guidance about this issue. The latest update is that the fix is rolling out and is expected to be complete in the next 24 hours. The product team has telemetry to see the progression, and they see the queue coming down at a steady rate.

Hi, I'm John! I will help you with this.

If you’re only seeing 5GB inside the Windows OneDrive app, it might just need a refresh. In that case, please try unlinking and re-linking your OneDrive using the steps here: "Unlink and re-link OneDrive" https://support.microsoft.com/office/unlink-and-re-link-onedrive-3c4680bf-cc36-4204-9ca5-e7b24cdd23ea

You can also try to reset the Outlook app from Settings > Apps > Installed app, and sign out and sign in again.

If the issue still persists, please wait another 24 hours for everything to fully update across your account.

Click "Add comment" to let me know.

    Regards,

    John J.D.

The banner in Outlook.com is triggered when Microsoft cloud storage is considered full, and this can block sending and receiving mail even if the detailed storage view looks almost empty.

From the screenshots, this matches a known Outlook.com issue where storage is shown incorrectly (for example 0/0 GB or over‑limit) while the detailed storage page shows normal usage. This issue has been identified and a fix is being rolled out on Microsoft’s servers.

In this situation, the recommended actions are:

    1. Verify storage status
      • Open the storage page from the banner (Manage storage) and confirm that both Microsoft storage and Email storage are under their limits, as shown in the second screenshot.
    2. Free some space as a workaround
      • Delete a few large items and attachments from Outlook.com and OneDrive (for example via the Outlook (Attachments) and OneDrive links on the storage page), then empty Deleted Items/Recycle Bin.
      • Sign out of Outlook.com and sign back in.
    3. If the error persists
      • This is expected while the server‑side fix is still propagating. No additional client‑side changes are required; sending/receiving should resume once the fix reaches the account.

If mail still cannot be sent or received after some time and storage still shows as full in the banner, contact Microsoft support from Outlook.com so the account can be checked against the resolved storage bug.
