Outlook (the mail app) itself is free to use with an email account like Spectrum. The message about an expired subscription is almost certainly about a Microsoft 365 subscription, not about having an Outlook email address.
What is happening:
- The yellow bar saying something like “Renew your subscription” or “Subscription expired” appears when a Microsoft 365 subscription (which includes the premium Outlook features and Office apps like Word/Excel) is about to expire or has expired.
- This can show even if the email account in Outlook is from Spectrum, because the subscription is tied to the Microsoft account signed into Outlook/Office, not to the email provider.
How to deal with it:
- Decide whether Microsoft 365 is actually needed.
- If only using Outlook to read Spectrum email and not using the Office apps or premium features, the subscription can be allowed to expire and the banner can be ignored. Outlook as a mail client will still work, but Microsoft 365 premium benefits (like extra features and storage) will not.
- If continued use of Microsoft 365 apps/features is wanted, renew the subscription:
- In the yellow bar, select Buy or Reactivate (depending on whether it says RENEW YOUR SUBSCRIPTION or SUBSCRIPTION EXPIRED) and follow the steps to renew online.
- If a new, unused Microsoft 365 product key was purchased from a retailer, choose Enter Key instead.
- After renewing:
- Close all Office apps (including Outlook) and reopen them so the message clears.
If the subscription was already renewed but the message still appears, verify the renewal status and sign-in:
- Check that the Microsoft 365 subscription is active and the expiration date is in the future.
- Make sure Outlook/Office is signed in with the same Microsoft account that owns the subscription.
If Microsoft 365 is not wanted at all going forward, the subscription can be cancelled so it does not auto-renew in the future, while still keeping the email account itself.
