    1

    Open Word.

At the top right of Word, log out of Office.

Restart (not shut down) your PC, then log back into Office, is your subscription then recognised correctly.

    2

If not, log into your Microsoft account on this link, check the expiry date listed on your subscription, is that listed correctly.

    https://account.microsoft.com/services/

If not, go to the Payments and Billing section, is it indicated your payment has been processed correctly.

The “Update payment” or similar billing notice in Microsoft 365 apps usually appears when there’s a problem with the subscription’s payment method, even if the subscription itself still shows as active. To clear it, verify both the subscription status and the stored payment method, and pay any past-due balance if present.

    Follow these steps:

    1. Confirm the subscription is active
      1. Close all Office apps.
      2. Go to the Services & subscriptions page: https://account.microsoft.com/services.
      3. Sign in with the Microsoft account used for the Microsoft 365 subscription.
      4. Under Microsoft 365, check that the subscription is not expired or suspended.
      5. If it is expired, renew it following the renewal guidance linked from that page.
    2. Check for past-due or billing problems
      1. On the same Services & subscriptions page, look for any past due or Pay now indicators.
      2. If a subscription is past due, select Pay now and complete payment. If needed, update or add a payment method during this flow.
    3. Make sure payment information is up to date
      1. Close all Office apps.
      2. Go to the Payment options page: https://account.microsoft.com/billing/payments.
      3. Sign in with the same Microsoft account.
      4. If the payment method shows an error (expired card, declined, etc.), update it or add a new way to pay.
      5. If recurring billing is enabled and you want to keep the subscription, ensure the active payment method is valid.
    4. Change how the subscription is paid (if needed)
      1. On Services & subscriptions, find the Microsoft 365 subscription and select Manage.
      2. Select Change how you pay.
      3. Choose a valid payment method or select Add a new way to pay and follow the instructions.
      4. If you see Pay now instead of Change how you pay, clear the past-due balance first.
    5. Restart Office apps
      1. After fixing payment details and any past-due balance, close all Office apps completely.
      2. Reopen Word/Excel/Outlook and confirm the “Update payment” or billing notice no longer appears.

If the notice persists after confirming the subscription is active, payment details are valid, and no past-due balance exists, contact Microsoft Billing Support from the account or support pages referenced in the articles to have the account and subscription checked.
