A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
Microsoft Authenticator does not provide a recycle bin or undo for deleted verification codes or verifiable credentials.
If a verifiable credential was deleted in Microsoft Authenticator:
- Open Microsoft Authenticator.
- Go to the credential card list.
- The deleted credential cannot be restored; deletion is irrevocable.
- To use it again, complete the original issuance/enrollment process with the organization or service that issued the credential.
If Authenticator accounts or OTP codes were lost (for example after app reinstall or device change):
- Use the built-in backup/restore feature, but only if backup was enabled before deletion and the same platform is used (iOS→iOS or Android→Android only).
- On iOS: ensure iCloud Drive, iCloud Keychain, and iCloud Backup are enabled, then reinstall Authenticator and sign in with the same Microsoft account used for backup so accounts can be restored.
- On Android: open Authenticator and select Restore from backup or Begin recovery, then sign in with the same personal Microsoft account used for backup.
- After restore, for many accounts only the account name is restored; sign-in is required again to re-activate passwordless or MFA methods.
- If backup is not available or cannot be accessed, each account must be re-added manually following that service’s MFA/OTP setup process.
If unable to restore because the backup account (iCloud or Microsoft account) cannot be accessed, recovery must first be done on that backup account using the appropriate support (for example, Apple Support for iCloud, or the Microsoft account sign-in helper for a Microsoft backup account).
