Issues or errors on the Microsoft Q&A website.
To fix a generic “unexpected error” when signing in, try the following steps that have resolved similar issues:
- Restart the device completely, then try to sign in again. Some “unexpected error” messages are caused by temporary system issues that clear after a restart.
- If the error happens in a browser, clear the browser cache and cookies, then try again, or use a different browser or an InPrivate/Incognito window.
- If the error happens in a mobile app (such as Outlook or Teams), uninstall the app, restart the phone, then reinstall the app and sign in again. This has resolved “An unexpected error occurred” sign-in problems on mobile devices.
- If the error is shown by a Microsoft site or service and persists after these steps, wait at least 30 minutes and try again. Some tenant or service issues are temporary and resolve on their own.
- If the error still appears, collect the exact error message, any correlation ID, timestamp, and the URL of the page where it occurs, then post that information in the Microsoft Q&A Community Center under the appropriate product tag so moderators can investigate.
If the “unexpected error” is specifically from Office VBA code, close all Office apps and restart Windows. If the error persists, open the VBA editor, select the item that triggers the error, and press F1 to open context help for more details.
