Processes in Microsoft 365 for setting up Office apps, redeeming product keys, and activating licenses.
For Microsoft 365 Home subscriptions, devices such as macOS, iOS, and Android cannot be added to the Microsoft account “devices” list. Only supported Windows devices (and Surface serials) appear there. Being unable to add a device in that list does not prevent using Microsoft 365 after paying for it.
To use Microsoft 365 after purchase, do the following:
- Install and sign in on the device
- On each PC or Mac, install Microsoft 365 from the account portal as usual.
- When prompted in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or Outlook, sign in with the same Microsoft account that the subscription is associated with.
- If the device does not appear under the Microsoft account devices list
- This is expected for macOS and mobile devices; they cannot be added at this time.
- For Windows devices, they are added automatically when signing in. If it does not appear immediately, it can take up to 24 hours for a registered device to show.
- If the device limit is reached and apps will not activate
- Only 10 devices can download Microsoft Store apps and content per Microsoft account.
- Unlink devices no longer in use:
- Go to https://account.microsoft.com/devices/content and sign in.
- Find a device to remove and select Unlink.
- Confirm by selecting Unlink again.
- For PCs no longer owned or used:
- Go to https://account.microsoft.com/devices/.
- Select the device and choose Remove device.
- Confirm removal.
- For mobile devices no longer owned or used:
- Go to https://account.microsoft.com/devices/android-ios/.
- Select the device and choose Unlink.
- Common reasons a device cannot be added
- macOS or mobile devices cannot be added to the devices list.
- The device is already added under a different Microsoft account.
- A company‑managed PC cannot be registered to a personal Microsoft account.
- It may take up to 24 hours for a newly registered device to appear.
If Microsoft 365 apps still cannot be used after confirming the correct account and freeing device slots, contact Microsoft support for subscription and activation assistance.
