I purchased a new Acer laptop a year and a half ago from Costco, and it is now going on the fritz. I am thinking of returning it to Costco and getting a replacement. My problem is I also purchased the Windows 11 Pro upgrade, and I want to know if I can transfer this to the replacement laptop?

    Hi Albright,

If you bought the Windows 11 Pro upgrade separately in the Microsoft Store app, Microsoft says that purchase is delivered as a digital license, and Microsoft’s Windows license terms say stand-alone software may be transferred to another device that belongs to you, as long as you remove it from the old device first. If the Pro edition was preinstalled or bundled with the Acer, it is tied to that licensed device and is not transferable by itself. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/find-your-windows-product-key-aaa2bf69-7b2b-9f13-f581-a806abf0a886

On the replacement laptop, sign in with the same Microsoft account and go to Settings -> System -> Activation. Microsoft says digital licenses are linked to your Microsoft account and hardware, and the Activation troubleshooter is the tool to use after a hardware change. Because Pro is an upgrade from Home, the replacement device generally needs to be on Windows Home before you apply the Pro license.

Transferring a Windows 11 Pro upgrade license to replacement hardware depends on how the license was originally obtained and activated. The provided context only describes how to upgrade from Windows Home to Pro (for example, via Microsoft Store) and how to get or install Windows 11, but does not state any rules or rights about moving a purchased Windows 11 Pro upgrade from one physical device to another.

Because the context does not define whether such an upgrade can be transferred between devices, no definitive statement can be made here about using that same Windows 11 Pro upgrade on a replacement laptop.
