    Hi,

If possible, do you have any third-party antivirus software? If so, which one?

If it's a laptop, what is the laptop model?

Access msinfo32.exe in the search bar, take a screenshot, and post it here.

Access the device manager, take a screenshot, and post it here.

Check the keyboard between the F1 and F12 keys to see if there's one with a camera icon. Press it to see if it unlocks. If that doesn't work, try Fn+F and the key with the camera icon.

Also check if it's a laptop; there should be a privacy palette located on top of the camera.

    Thanks

Try these targeted checks for a black camera in Windows 11:

    1. Test if the issue is with one app or the whole system
    • Open Start > Camera.
    • If the preview works there but not in another app (for example, Teams, Zoom, browser), the problem is with that app’s camera settings. Select the correct camera in that app and allow camera access.
    1. Check for Windows updates
    • Go to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Check for updates.
    • If View optional updates appears, select it and install any camera or driver updates.
    • Restart the PC using Start > Power > Restart (do not just wake from sleep) and test the camera again in the Camera app.
    1. Update the camera driver
    • Right‑click Start and select Device Manager.
    • Expand Cameras (or Imaging devices / Sound, video and game controllers) and locate the camera.
    • Right‑click the camera > Update driver > Search automatically for drivers.
    • After it finishes, restart the PC and test with the Camera app.
    1. Check for hardware/driver issues
    • If using an external webcam, plug it into a different USB port and test again.
    • In Device Manager, if the camera is missing, select Action > Scan for hardware changes and then restart.
    • In Device Manager, right‑click the camera > Properties > Driver > Driver Details:
      • If a file including stream.sys appears, the camera is too old (pre‑Windows 7) and needs to be replaced.
    1. Run the built‑in camera troubleshooter
    1. Check antivirus/privacy
    • Some antivirus or firewall tools can block the camera. Temporarily disable camera‑blocking features in that software and test again.
    1. Physical checks
    • Ensure the lens is not covered by a privacy shutter or tape and is clean.

If the camera shows a black image in the Windows Camera app even after these steps, and the device is not too old (no stream.sys), this usually indicates a hardware fault and the camera or device likely needs service or replacement.
