Hello, I have been having trouble with 2-Step Verification. I downloaded the Microsoft Authenticator app and once I try to log in and input the code the app gives me, it says it’s “wrong code” every time.

Please help.

thank you

Try these steps to resolve the “wrong code” issue with Microsoft Authenticator:

    1. Check the account type and prompt
      • If the sign-in screen is asking for a 6-digit one-time password (OTP), make sure the account in Microsoft Authenticator shows a “One-time password code” entry and use that code.
      • If the sign-in is asking to approve a notification or enter the number shown on screen, do not type the OTP; instead, approve the prompt in the app or enter the number requested.
    2. Ensure time and date are correct on the phone
      • Time-based codes will be rejected if the device time is off. Turn on automatic date/time and time zone on the phone, then try again.
    3. Avoid repeated failed attempts
      • Multiple wrong codes or sign-in attempts can trigger protection systems and temporarily block verification, causing valid codes to fail. If many attempts were made, wait and try again later or use another MFA method if available.
    4. Try an alternate verification method if configured
      • If SMS, email, or another method is set up, choose “I don’t have a code” or similar on the sign-in page and select a different verification option.
    5. If no method works and this is a work or school account
      • Contact the organization’s IT administrator and ask them to reset the MFA settings in Microsoft Entra so Authenticator can be re-registered.
    6. If locked out and you are the only admin on a business tenant
      • Call Microsoft using the regional Customer service phone numbers - Microsoft Support and request a ticket with the Data Protection team to reset MFA for the admin account, as described in the referenced Q&A articles.

If none of the above works and no alternative method is available, recovery will require working with the organization’s admin or Microsoft support (Data Protection team) to reset MFA from their side.
