To earn the CompTIA A+ certification, you must successfully pass two separate exams: Core 1 and Core 2. The current versions are exam codes 220-1201 for Core 1 and 220-1202 for Core 2. These exams can be taken in any order, but you must pass both from the same series to be awarded the credential. Each exam consists of a maximum of 90 questions, including multiple-choice, drag-and-drop, and performance-based questions (PBQs), with a 90-minute time limit per test.

Preparation typically begins with downloading the official exam objectives from the CompTIA website to understand exactly what topics will be covered. Core 1 focuses on hardware, networking technology, mobile devices, virtualization, and cloud computing. Core 2 emphasizes operating systems, including Windows, macOS, and Linux, as well as security, software troubleshooting, and operational procedures. While there are no formal prerequisites, CompTIA recommends having roughly nine to twelve months of hands-on IT experience or at least 120 hours of dedicated study time.

Studying often involves a combination of reading official guides, watching instructional videos, and taking practice tests to gauge readiness. High-quality resources include textbooks like the CompTIA A+ Certification All-in-One Exam Guide and the CompTIA A+ Complete Study Guide, both of which cover current exam objectives.

Once prepared, you must purchase exam vouchers, which currently cost approximately $246 per exam in the United States, totaling nearly $500 for the full certification. You then schedule your exams through a Pearson VUE account. Tests can be taken in person at an authorized testing center or remotely via online proctoring. Online exams require a private, quiet space and a system that meets specific technical requirements, including a webcam and a reliable internet connection.

After passing both exams, your certification is valid for three years. To maintain it, you must participate in CompTIA’s Continuing Education (CE) program, which involves completing 20 hours of approved educational activities or passing a higher-level certification before the three-year period expires.
