I want file explorer in win 11 to show the image preview in preview pane like it used to. my preview is just a icon for the viewer that opens that file type. i.e. .jpg or .png

    Hi,

It seems the preview pane isn't working

    In the Windows search,

Type cmd, right-click it, and choose Run as Administrator.

    Execute these commands:

    taskkill /f /im explorer.exe
    del /f /s /q %LocalAppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer\thumbcache_*.db
    start explorer.exe

I’m eager to hear back and work together to find a solution.

Configure the built-in preview and thumbnail features so File Explorer shows image previews instead of just icons:

    1. Turn on the Preview pane in File Explorer
      • Open File Explorer.
      • In Windows 11, select View on the ribbon and choose Preview pane.
      • Select a .jpg or .png file and confirm a pane appears on the right.
    2. Allow preview handlers in Folder Options
      • In File Explorer, select Options.
      • Go to the View tab.
      • In Advanced settings, ensure Show preview handlers in preview pane is checked.
      • Select OK.
    3. Ensure thumbnails are enabled (if using PowerToys add-ons)
      • If using PowerToys File Explorer add-ons for thumbnails, open PowerToys settings.
      • Go to File Explorer add-ons.
      • Set the relevant extension (for image/thumbnail preview) to On.
      • If thumbnails still don’t appear, restart Windows because a reboot may be required after enabling thumbnail previewers.
    4. Be aware of cloud storage behavior
      • If images are stored in locations managed by cloud solutions like OneDrive, thumbnails might come from the cloud instead of being generated locally, which can affect how previews appear.

If the preview pane still only shows icons after these steps, a system repair (such as using Windows Update repair options) may be required, as similar preview issues have been resolved that way.
