Retrieve emails before 2008

Question

Hi, my hotmail account is from 1997 and I am unable to see older emails than 2008. I want to be able to see those emails. Support could not help me to get them, they dont have access to archives.

I understand how important those older emails are, especially with an account that goes back as far as 1997—thank you for explaining the background so clearly.

Unfortunately, emails from before around 2008 cannot be recovered in Outlook.com / Hotmail. Microsoft did not retain indefinite server-side archives from the earliest Hotmail era. Messages that no longer appear in the mailbox are not stored in a separate archive, and Support does not have backend access to restore them.

At this point, the only possible way those emails could exist is if they were previously:

• Downloaded to a local email client (such as Outlook, Outlook Express, or Windows Live Mail)
• Backed up in PST files, old hard drives, or legacy computers

If you have access to any old devices or backups from that time, it may be worth checking them. Otherwise, sadly, there is no supported method to restore pre‑2008 emails from Microsoft’s servers.

Emails in an Outlook.com/Hotmail account that have been deleted or removed due to inactivity cannot be recovered.

If an Outlook.com mailbox is not signed into for at least one year, Microsoft closes the mailbox and deletes all email. Additionally, a Microsoft account that is not signed into for two years is considered inactive and is closed, with associated services and data removed. Once messages are deleted in this way, they are permanently removed and not accessible to support or to the account owner.

For very old messages (such as from the late 1990s or early 2000s), if they no longer appear in the mailbox and support has confirmed there is no archive available, there is no Microsoft mechanism to restore or view them.
