Windows can show as deactivated after an update for several common reasons. Use these steps to narrow it down and fix it:

    1. Check the activation error code
      • Go to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Activation (Windows 10) or Settings > System > Activation (Windows 11).
      • Note any error code shown (for example 0x800704CF, 0x803F7001, or one of the codes listed in the activation errors article).
    2. Confirm you have a valid product key or digital license
      • Windows requires either a 25-character product key or a digital license.
      • The key is usually in:
        • The confirmation email from when Windows was purchased.
        • The packaging that came with the device.
        • A Certificate of Authenticity (COA) label on the device.
      • If Windows originally came preinstalled, the key may be embedded in firmware and activation should be automatic once the correct edition is installed.
    3. Re-enter the product key (if available)
      • In the Activation page, select Change product key.
      • Enter the 25-character key and complete activation.
    4. Use the Activation troubleshooter (if available)
      • On the Activation page, run the Windows Activation troubleshooter.
      • Follow the prompts; if a major hardware change was detected or activation servers were temporarily unavailable, the troubleshooter can often fix it.
    5. Check for common activation error causes
      • If the error indicates no valid license found (e.g., 0x800704CF), ensure a valid product key is used and re-enter it.
      • If the error indicates the key can’t be used or has been used on too many devices, a different key or a new product key is required.
      • If Windows was originally activated using a digital license (for example, from a free upgrade), make sure the device is signed in with the same Microsoft account and that no significant hardware changes (like motherboard replacement) were made.
    6. If activation still fails
      • If the Activation page shows one of the listed error codes that indicate the key is invalid or blocked, a new product key or copy of Windows is required.
      • If the error is not listed or persists after these steps, contact Microsoft customer support as indicated in the activation errors article.
