To reset the password without access to the old phone number, the account must be recovered and the security info replaced.
Follow these steps depending on what is still available:
- If the password is known but only the phone number is lost (some security info still works):
- Sign in to the Advanced security options page of the Microsoft account using an available verification method.
- Select Add a new way to sign in or verify and add the new phone number or email.
- Verify it with the code that is sent, then select Next.
- Expand the old phone number under security info and select Remove, then confirm.
- After that, use the new phone number for future verification codes.
- If the password is known but access to all security info (old phone, old email, etc.) is lost:
- Start signing in to the Microsoft account.
- At the Verify your identity prompt, select I don't have any of these.
- Follow the instructions to replace the security info with the new phone/email.
- After the replacement, there is a mandatory 30‑day waiting period before normal sign‑in is allowed. During these 30 days, if the old security info is found and used, the update will be canceled.
- If the password is forgotten and there is no access to any security info:
- Use the account recovery form as described in Help with the Microsoft account recovery form and submit a request to recover the account.
- Provide as much accurate information as possible so ownership can be verified.
- If the username or password has simply stopped working but the account is still recognized:
- Go to Recover your account and follow the steps to reset the password using any available security option.
If the recovery form and security‑info replacement do not succeed, support agents cannot manually bypass these protections or change the phone number on the account.
