Right clicking does not offer spelling options in spell check

With recent versions of Word, just clicking inside a marked spelling error should produce a list of suggestions.

   

If you are saying that you don't even see the underlines which indicate spelling errors, select all the text in the document (Ctrl+A), and then re-apply the correct language via the Language dialog box (Review tab > Language group > Language > Set Proofing Language). In the dialog box, also ensure that you clear the option "Do not check spelling or grammar."

In Word on Windows, spelling options when right‑clicking only appear if Word is actively detecting a spelling error in that word. If right‑clicking does not show spelling suggestions, the most common causes are that automatic spell check is off, the document/language is set not to check spelling, or the wrong language/proofing tools are active.

Use these checks in Word:

1. Verify automatic spelling check is enabled
   • Open Word.
   • Go to File > Options > Proofing.
   • Ensure Check spelling as you type is turned on.
   • Ensure Hide spelling errors in this document only is not checked.
2. Make sure the text is not marked “Do not check spelling or grammar”
   • Select the problem text (or press Ctrl+A to select all).
   • Go to Review > Language > Set Proofing Language.
   • Clear the Do not check spelling or grammar checkbox.
   • Confirm the correct language is selected and click OK.
3. Confirm the correct proofing language/tools
   • In Review > Language > Set Proofing Language, ensure the language you want (for example, English) is selected.
   • If Word reports that proofing tools are not installed for that language, install the appropriate proofing tools and restart Word.

After these steps, misspelled words should show a red squiggly underline; right‑clicking them will then display spelling suggestions and related options.
