An error says I can't log in with facial recognition because another app is using the camera. This just started happening recently. How can I figure out what app is using the camera and stop it?

Hi, I'm Bernard. I'm happy to help!

Based on your inputs, there might be an incompatibility with the camera driver. Moreover, kindly follow the steps provided by Q&A Assist. If the issue persists, kindly follow the steps below:

-Press the Windows key + X

    -Go to Device Manager

-Expand the Camera or Imaging Device

-Look for the Camera driver that was installed

    -Right-click and click Update Driver

-Select Browse my computer for drivers

-Click Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer

-Choose an old driver or another driver name, then select it and hit next until it installs.

    -Restart the PC and check.

To find which app is using the camera and stop it so Windows Hello facial recognition can work again, use these steps:

    1. Close background apps that might use the camera
      • Close all video/meeting/chat apps that could be using the camera (for example, Teams, browsers with video calls open, or other camera apps).
    2. Use Task Manager to see and stop apps using the camera
      1. Right‑click the taskbar and select Task Manager.
      2. In Processes, look for apps that could be using the camera (browsers, conferencing tools, camera utilities).
      3. Right‑click any suspicious app and select End task to close it.
    3. Check camera privacy settings
      1. Select Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Camera.
      2. Make sure Camera access is turned on.
      3. Make sure Let apps access your camera is turned on.
      4. In the same page, review which apps are allowed to use the camera. If an app is always grabbing the camera, turn its access Off so it cannot block Windows Hello.
      5. If using desktop apps (like browsers or Teams), scroll to Allow desktop apps to access your camera and ensure it is turned on, then review the list of apps there as well.
    4. Try signing in with Windows Hello again
      • Lock the PC (Win+L) and try facial recognition sign‑in once more. If the camera is free and permissions are correct, Windows Hello should be able to use it.

If the problem persists, run the Windows Hello troubleshooter or follow the additional tips for Windows Hello facial recognition issues in the referenced articles.
