The recurring “Update payment” / billing problem banner in Microsoft 365 apps usually appears when there is a billing or subscription issue on the account, even if the apps still work.
Use these steps to clear it:
- Confirm the Microsoft 365 subscription is active
- Close all Office apps (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.).
- Go to the Subscriptions page: https://account.microsoft.com/services
- Sign in with the same Microsoft account used in the Office apps.
- Under Microsoft 365, verify the subscription status is active (not expired or suspended).
- If it is expired, renew it following the guidance in Renew Microsoft 365 Family. After renewal, restart an Office app and check if the banner is gone.
- Fix any payment or billing issues
- Close all Office apps.
- Go to Payment options: https://account.microsoft.com/billing/payments
- Sign in with the same Microsoft account.
- If the payment method shows an error (expired card, declined payment, etc.), update or replace it.
- If recurring billing is on and the card is invalid, update it as described in Change your Microsoft subscription payment method and options (select the subscription → Manage → Change how you pay and add a valid payment method).
- After updating payment details, restart an Office app and confirm the message disappears.
- Check for conflicting or old subscriptions/licenses
If more than one Office/Microsoft 365 subscription or license is associated with the same account (for example, an old Office 365 subscription and a new Microsoft 365 subscription), an expired one can trigger billing warnings even when a new one is active.
- On the Subscriptions page, look for any old or expired Office 365/Microsoft 365 subscriptions.
- Remove or stop using the expired subscription and ensure the active Microsoft 365 subscription is the one associated with the signed-in account in the Office apps.
- After aligning the account with the correct active subscription, restart the apps.
If none of these steps are taken, Office may eventually switch to reduced functionality mode, where documents can be opened and printed but not edited or newly created.
In the meantime, if needed, Office Online can be used for free in a browser at https://www.office.com/.
