I haven’t played Minecraft on my Xbox in about a year. I wanted to play today. First, Xbox was telling me I didn’t own the game. I used to have xbox live gold but obviously it is no longer active and I also bought the physical disc for the game a while ago but couldn’t find my disc. I got premium to play the game. I have tried to open Minecraft but it won’t work. It just shows the mojang screen then black. I have restarted, uninstalled, updated, and exited the game many times but nothing seems to work!!!

Use the following steps on the Xbox to fix Minecraft stopping at the Mojang screen and going black:

  1. Fully close and relaunch Minecraft
    • Press the Xbox button.
    • Highlight Minecraft, press the Menu button, and select Quit.
    • Wait a few seconds, then launch Minecraft again.
  2. Make sure the console and game are fully updated
    • Go to Settings > System > Updates and install any available console updates.
    • Open My games & apps > Manage > Updates and install any Minecraft updates.
  3. Power cycle the Xbox
    • Hold the Xbox power button on the console for 10 seconds until it fully shuts down.
    • Unplug the power cable for 30–60 seconds.
    • Plug it back in and turn the console on, then try Minecraft again.
  4. Reinstall Minecraft
    • From My games & apps, highlight Minecraft.
    • Press the Menu button and choose Uninstall.
    • After it’s removed, reinstall Minecraft from My games & apps > Full library or from the Store.
  5. Verify ownership and subscription
    • Make sure the account signed in on the Xbox is the one that owns Minecraft digitally or has the active subscription that grants access.
    • If the game was only owned via disc and the disc is missing, a digital license or active subscription is required.
  6. If the issue persists
    • This is a game/app installation problem on Xbox. Use the Xbox support flow for game or app installation issues on console for further troubleshooting and, if needed, contact support.
