Use these steps to turn the camera on in Windows 11 when there is no obvious hardware switch:
- Check for a keyboard camera key
- Look along the top row of keys (F1–F12) for a key with a camera icon.
- If present, press that key once.
- If nothing happens, press Fn + (camera key) together, as some laptops require the Fn key to toggle the camera.
- Look again for a physical shutter or switch
- Carefully inspect the bezel around the camera at the top of the screen for a very small slider that can move left/right.
- Also check the sides of the laptop for a tiny sliding switch.
- Make sure any slider is in the open position so the lens is not covered.
- Turn on camera access in Windows privacy settings
- Select Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Camera (or Settings > Privacy > Camera).
- Under Allow access to the camera on this device, select Change and turn Camera access for this device On.
- Turn Allow apps to access your camera On.
- Under Choose which Microsoft Store apps can access your camera, turn On the apps that should use the camera.
- Under Allow desktop apps to access your camera, make sure this is On so apps like browsers and Teams can use it.
- Test the camera in the Camera app
- Select Start > Camera.
- If prompted, allow access to the camera.
- If the preview works here but not in another app, adjust that app’s own camera settings.
- Run the camera troubleshooter (Windows 11)
If the camera still shows as blocked or black after these steps, check any antivirus or security software settings, as they can also block camera access.
