My Copilot mode is still set to Chat Only. The Edit toggle worked for me yesterday, but it’s not working today. Any guidance would be appreciated.

In Word, Edit with Copilot has some current limitations and behaviors that can explain why only Chat mode is available today:

  1. Edit with Copilot cannot create new files and only works in the currently open document. If no eligible document is open, only Chat-style prompts may be available.
  2. Integration with external tools is not supported, so if the document or environment relies on such integrations, Edit mode may not appear.
  3. Copilot makes direct changes to the document when Edit is enabled. In some shared or sensitive files, or when using Work IQ, Copilot will first show a preview of changes in chat that must be confirmed before they apply. In these cases, the experience can look more like Chat-only until changes are approved.
  4. Copilot respects Track Changes. If Track Changes is on, Copilot edits are tracked; however, Copilot cannot turn Track Changes on or off or accept/reject changes. If the document is in a state where edits are restricted, Copilot may effectively behave as Chat-only.
  5. Edit with Copilot cannot add or modify comments and may remove comments if it changes the paragraph they are anchored to. In heavily commented documents, this can affect how and when Edit is offered.

If Edit worked previously and now only Chat is available, verify the following in Word:

  • A document is open and saved in a location where Copilot is allowed to edit.
  • The account in use still has an eligible Copilot license and that license is valid (for example, by confirming Copilot works in other Microsoft 365 apps or at Copilot.microsoft.com with the Work/Web toggle if applicable).
  • For shared or sensitive documents, review any collaboration or protection settings that might restrict direct edits.

If the issue persists across documents, sign out and back into Word, then restart the app. If still unresolved, contact the organization’s IT admin to confirm Copilot licensing and any recent policy changes that might limit Edit with Copilot.
