Follow these steps to improve performance and fix issues with apps and Windows features on a Windows 11 PC.
- Install all Windows and driver updates
- Select Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.
- If updates are found, select Download & install and let the process complete.
- Then go to Start > Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates.
- If optional updates (such as drivers) are available, select them and choose Download & install.
- Restart the PC if prompted.
- Scan for malware Malware can slow the PC and break apps.
- Select Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Windows Security > Virus & threat protection.
- Select Quick scan and let it finish.
- Restart the PC if requested.
- Adjust visual effects for best performance
- Select Start, type Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows, and open it.
- On the Visual Effects tab, select Adjust for best performance.
- Select OK.
- Set power mode to Best performance (if on AC power)
- Select Start > Settings > System > Power & sleep.
- Under Related settings, select Additional power settings.
- In Power Options, select Show additional plans (if shown).
- Select the High performance plan.
- Note: This increases power use and battery drain on laptops.
- Optimize drives
- Select Start, type Defragment and Optimize Drives, and open it.
- Select the system drive (usually C:).
- Select Optimize and let it complete.
- Close heavy apps and monitor resource usage
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- On the Processes tab, right-click apps that are not needed and select End task.
- Check the Performance and Startup apps tabs to see which apps use the most CPU, memory, or disk and disable unnecessary startup apps.
- Turn off unnecessary notifications
- Select Start > Settings > System > Notifications & actions.
- Turn off notifications for apps that are not needed.
- Restart regularly and limit open apps
- Close apps and browser tabs that are not in use.
- Select Start > Power > Restart.
- After restart, open only the apps that are needed and close them when finished.
If, after these steps, the PC is still very slow and apps remain broken, the hardware may be too old or damaged, and replacing or upgrading the device may be the most effective long-term solution.
