A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
Follow these steps to resolve the sign-in loop with Microsoft Authenticator:
- Make sure Authenticator can actually prompt for approval:
- Open the Authenticator app and ensure it is not locked (no app PIN/biometric screen blocking access).
- On the phone, go to Settings → Notifications → Microsoft Authenticator and confirm notifications are allowed and not set to “silent.”
- Check connectivity and device settings:
- Ensure the phone has a working internet connection; if using Wi‑Fi, switch briefly to mobile data (or vice versa) and try again.
- Turn off Airplane mode if it is enabled.
- Verify the device’s date and time are correct and set to automatic.
- Update Authenticator and the device:
- Open the app store on the phone and update Microsoft Authenticator to the latest version.
- Install any pending OS updates and update other Microsoft security apps (such as Microsoft Defender or Intune Company Portal) if present.
- Try an alternative sign-in method for the account:
- If the account has other methods configured (SMS, email, or a different authenticator), use those to sign in to the Microsoft account in a browser.
- Once signed in, go to the account’s security/MFA settings and either:
- Add Authenticator again by scanning a new QR code, or
- Temporarily disable or reset MFA, then reconfigure Authenticator from scratch.
- If none of the above works:
- For work or school accounts, contact the organization’s IT admin and ask them to reset MFA or require re‑registration of authentication methods in Microsoft Entra.
- If still unable to sign in or the password is forgotten, use the official password reset flow: Reset your password.
If the app shows “Authentication did not complete,” it is typically caused by one of: app locked, silent/blocked notifications, outdated app, network issues, or incorrect device date/time. Addressing these points usually restores access.
