The only working method to go from the Pro edition of Windows 10 to the Home edition is to clean install Windows 10 using a bootable USB.

If you have already reinstalled Windows using a bootable USB and the Pro edition was automatically installed somehow, this method should force the USB to install the Home edition.

Right click your Desktop, choose New - Text Document

Paste the text below into that document

    [EditionID]

    Core

    [Channel]

    OEM

Then choose File - Save As, at the bottom of the Save As dialog, change file type to 'All Files' then save that file as ei.cfg (note you must manually add the cfg file extension)

Then copy that ei.cfg file into the Sources folder in your Installation USB.

Then start the installation using the USB.

Windows 10 Pro cannot be activated with a Windows 10 Home license. The installed edition must match the license. To activate again, Windows 10 Home needs to be reinstalled on the PC.

Use one of these supported paths:

    1. Confirm the edition of the license
      • Select Start > Settings > Update & Security > Activation on the current install and check what edition is installed (it will show Windows 10 Pro now).
      • If the license that belongs to the device is Windows 10 Home, Pro will not activate with it.
    2. Reinstall Windows 10 Home (clean install)
      • Go to the Windows 10 media creation tool page referenced in the activation troubleshooter.
      • Use the tool to create installation media (USB/DVD) for Windows 10 Home.
      • Boot from that media and perform a clean installation, making sure to select Windows 10 Home when asked for the edition.
      • During setup, when asked for a product key, either:
        • Enter the Windows 10 Home product key, or
        • Skip entering a key if there is already a digital license for Windows 10 Home on the device.
      • After installation completes and the device is online, Windows 10 Home should activate automatically using the existing digital license if one is present.
    3. If Windows 10 Home is installed but still will not activate
      • Select Start > Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
      • Run the Activation troubleshooter (if available) to let it detect and use the digital license for Windows 10 Home.
    4. If the goal is to stay on Windows 10 Pro
      • A separate Windows 10 Pro license is required. A Home license cannot activate Pro.
      • If only a Home license is owned and Pro is installed, Pro will remain unactivated until a valid Pro key or digital license is used.
