Payment will not work

I'm trying to get a replacement charger sent, and Microsoft needs to place a hold on my account to do so. I'm using my credit card that has an available balance larger than what Microsoft will charge, and I keep getting the same error message:

PUR-InvalidPaymentInstrumentForProduct uXFfWDjHpkmlsjUe.21.226.5

My bank has not blocked the transaction either; it's been three days of me trying to get this to work.

Hello Madelynn, good day and thanks for your question. Sorry to know about this and I understand that you are having an issue with regards to the payment method for your Microsoft 365 subscription.

If your card is up to date and you have also verified that it is working for other purchase that you made online, please check and try this on a different browser or by using inPrivate or Incognito browsing and another alternative is to link your card to PayPal and use it as payment method. Please see below for other things that you can also check with regards to this issue.

    • Enter your name precisely as it appears on the card and only include your middle initial if it appears on your card.
    • If this is a company card, enter the company name as both a first name and last name. For example, if the company name is "My Company" you may split the company name into the first and last name fields.
    • If the company only has one name, for example, "Company," enter the company name in both the first and last name fields.
    • If you are asked to enter the address and it exceeds the Address 1 field, use the Address 2 field and do not shorten or abbreviate your address.
    • The card number and type cannot be edited, so if you make a mistake, you'll need to add a new one with the correct information. Other credit card information can be edited, such as billing address and expiration date.

If you will still encounter an issue even after trying out the alternatives, you can reach out to the support team at https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/contactus/ and then click on Microsoft 365 and then click Get Home Support and then type in Billing question and click the blue button that says Sign in to contact Support and login and proceed from there.

The error indicates that the payment method is being rejected for this specific type of transaction, even though the card has sufficient balance and the bank isn’t actively blocking it. For Microsoft consumer accounts and Store purchases, the following checks and actions are supported:

    1. Verify the card and billing details
      • Go to the Payment options page: https://account.microsoft.com/billing/payments
      • Confirm that:
        • Card number, expiration date, and CVV are correct.
        • Name and billing address (including city, state, ZIP/postal code, and country/region) exactly match what the bank has on file.
      • If the card details are outdated, update them or add the card again as a new payment method.
    2. Check for account or subscription issues
      • On the Services & subscriptions page (https://account.microsoft.com/services/), verify there are no past-due Microsoft subscriptions. A past-due balance can block new transactions or holds.
      • Ensure the Microsoft account is not temporarily suspended and, if applicable, that any Xbox account linked to it is not suspended.
    3. Confirm the card type and region are supported
      • Some cards are not accepted for certain products or regions (for example, some virtual or prepaid cards, or cards not enabled for international/online transactions). Even if the bank says the card is fine, Microsoft may still reject it for this product.
      • If using a virtual or prepaid card, switch to a standard debit or credit card.
    4. Rule out browser or security software issues
      • Make sure antivirus or browser security is not blocking pop-ups or payment confirmation windows that Microsoft uses for verification.
      • Try a different browser or device and repeat the payment/hold process.
    5. Try an alternate payment method
      • If possible, add a different credit/debit card on the Payment options page and attempt the hold again.
    6. If the issue persists, contact Microsoft Support
      • For consumer Microsoft account and Store billing issues, use the guided support from the Microsoft Store buying issues article to reach support and provide the exact error code PUR-InvalidPaymentInstrumentForProduct and the steps already tried.
