To use face and fingerprint to unlock a Windows laptop, Windows Hello must be set up in Settings and the device must have compatible hardware (camera and fingerprint reader).

Follow these steps to configure Windows Hello:

    1. Open the Settings app.
    2. Go to Accounts > Sign-in options.
    3. Under Ways to sign in, configure a PIN first:
      • Select PIN (Windows Hello).
      • Select Set up (or I forgot my PIN if a PIN exists but is not working) and follow the instructions.
    4. After the PIN is set, configure biometrics:
      • For face: select Facial recognition (Windows Hello) > Set up and follow the on‑screen steps. This requires a Hello-compatible infrared camera.
      • For fingerprint: select Fingerprint recognition (Windows Hello) > Set up and follow the instructions using the built‑in or external fingerprint reader.

If fingerprint is not working or not allowed when adding it:

    1. Sign in with the PIN.
    2. Go to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options > Fingerprint recognition (Windows Hello).
    3. Try one of these:
      • Select Add another and enroll the finger again, placing the finger in the middle of the sensor with light pressure and slightly changing position during setup.
      • If a fingerprint is already registered, select Remove, then select Set up and enroll again.

    Tips for better fingerprint recognition:

    • Use the same finger that was used during setup.
    • Make sure the finger is clean and dry.
    • Place the finger flat in the middle of the power button or fingerprint reader, with a larger portion of the finger on the sensor and light pressure.
    • Avoid moving the finger while it is being scanned.
    • If the finger has scars or damage, choose another finger and enroll that one.

If Windows Hello still does not allow adding face or fingerprint, or if it previously worked and stopped, a recently installed app, driver, or update may be causing issues. In that case, consider restoring or resetting the PC as described in the Surface reset guidance.

If the device does not have a Hello-compatible camera or fingerprint reader, only the PIN option will be available.
