Using New Outlook on Windows for professional communication and productivity
Outlook does not provide a feature to lock an email subject line to prevent it from being edited. In fact, Outlook explicitly allows changing the subject of received messages:
- Open the message in its own window (double-click it).
- Click into the subject line, select it, and type a new subject.
- Save and close the message.
If the subject cannot be edited, this is typically because the message header is collapsed. Expanding the header restores the ability to edit the subject, which confirms that subject editing is a supported behavior rather than something that can be locked:
- Open the message.
- Select the lower-right arrow in the message header (Infobar) to expand it.
- Once expanded, the subject field becomes editable.
There is no supported setting in the provided documentation to prevent users from editing subjects or to enforce a “locked” subject for grouping.
