Building and customizing solutions using Microsoft 365 Copilot APIs and tools
The error when using Copilot for redaction (rewriting text) is typically caused by license validation or Copilot not being correctly enabled in Microsoft 365 Apps.
To address this, follow these checks in order:
- Verify the signed-in account
- In the Microsoft 365 app (for example, Outlook, Word, or Excel), confirm that the signed-in profile is the one that has the Copilot license.
- If multiple accounts are signed in (for example, a personal Microsoft account and a work/school account), sign out of the account that does not have Copilot and sign in only with the licensed account.
- Confirm the correct account type for the file
- If working on a work or school file, ensure the work/school account provided by the organization is used.
- If using a Microsoft 365 Personal/Family/Premium subscription, ensure the file is not from an organization that expects a work/school account.
- Check file location
- If the file is stored in a third-party storage location, move or copy it to OneDrive or SharePoint and then try using Copilot again. Some license validation errors occur when files are not stored in Microsoft 365 locations.
- Check for licensing or propagation issues
- If a Copilot license was recently assigned, it can take some time before Copilot features (such as rewrite/redaction) start working. Wait and try again later.
- If the Copilot button is missing, disabled, or still shows errors, follow the steps in “How to find and enable missing Copilot button in Microsoft 365 apps” as referenced in the documentation.
- Involve the admin or support if issues persist
- For home users: after confirming the above, contact Support for further assistance.
- For business users: ask the Microsoft 365 admin to verify that a license that supports Microsoft 365 Copilot is assigned and that Copilot is not blocked by organizational policies. The admin can then contact Microsoft support if needed.
