Sending, receiving, and organizing email in Outlook.com
Use delivery and read receipts.
A delivery receipt confirms that the message reached the recipient’s mailbox. A read receipt confirms that the recipient opened the message. Both arrive as separate notification messages and are recorded with the original message in Sent Items (or delivered to the Inbox, depending on Outlook version).
To request a delivery or read receipt for a single message (classic Outlook on Windows/Mac):
- Compose a new email.
- On the Options tab, in the Tracking group, select:
- Request a Delivery Receipt to be notified when the message is delivered.
- Request a Read Receipt to be notified when the message is opened.
To turn on tracking for all messages (classic Outlook on Windows):
- Go to File > Options > Mail.
- Under Tracking, choose the delivery/read receipt options to apply to all outgoing messages.
Notes and limitations:
- Recipients can decline to send read receipts.
- Some email programs and servers do not support receipts.
- If the message is only previewed in a Reading Pane, a read receipt might not be sent.
