I've tried scanning from my printer to my laptop. Message "to scan to computer, visit 123.hp.com/setup to download HP software. I did this but the same message comes up when I scan again.

Also, where is the scanned document so I can see it?

Thank you.

Hi. I'm David, and I'm happy to help you.

To be able to assist you better, could you tell me the model of your printer?

Also, take a look at your computer: did you install HP Smart or HP Printer Assistant?

    Looking forward to your reply.

Use the Windows tools to scan and to find where scans are saved, instead of relying on the printer’s front‑panel “scan to computer” feature.

    1. Verify Windows sees the HP device as a scanner
      1. Select StartSettingsDevicesPrinters & scanners (or use this shortcut: Open Printers & scanners).
      2. In Printers & scanners, confirm the HP printer/scanner is listed.
      3. If it is a multifunction printer, select it → Manage. In the Manage your device window, open the drop‑down; one of the entries should start with Scanner: if Windows detects the scanner part.
    2. Scan using the Windows Scan app
      1. Make sure the printer/scanner is turned on.
      2. Right‑click StartSearch.
      3. In Type here to search, enter: Windows Scan.
      4. Select Scan under Apps. If it doesn’t appear, install the Windows Scan app from Microsoft Store using the provided Windows Scan link.
      5. Place the document on the flatbed or in the document feeder, as appropriate.
      6. In the Scan app:
        • Ensure the correct device is selected in the Scanner drop‑down.
        • Set Source to Flatbed, Feeder, or Auto-configured as needed.
        • Choose a File type (JPEG, PNG, TIFF, or Bitmap).
        • Select Show more, then under Save file to, choose the folder where scans should be saved.
      7. Select Scan at the bottom of the window. When finished, the scan is automatically saved to the selected folder.
    3. Find the scanned document
      1. Right‑click StartFile Explorer.
      2. Browse to the folder chosen in Save file to in the Scan app.
      3. If no folder was chosen, the default location is the Pictures/Scans folder in the user profile.

Using the Windows Scan app ensures scans go directly to the chosen folder on the laptop, regardless of the HP front‑panel message.
