If Word was open and work was being edited when something went wrong, there are two common possibilities based on the provided information:

    1. The file was deleted or became inaccessible while being edited
      • If a document is being edited and the file is deleted or access is lost (for example, if it was on OneDrive, SharePoint, or a shared location), Word can show errors like "Upload failed" or "Couldn't save automatically" and may ask to save a copy.
      • In that case, the original file may no longer be available, but a copy can sometimes be saved locally when prompted.
      • If the document was stored in OneDrive or SharePoint/Teams and was deleted, it may be possible to restore it from the recycle bin of the site or from the OneDrive recycle bin using the restore options described in the references.
    2. The save process was interrupted
      • Office apps save to a temporary file and then replace the original when saving. If this process is interrupted (for example, by a crash, connection issue, or system problem), the workbook or document might not save correctly and temporary files may be left behind in the folder.
      • In such cases, checking the original folder for temporary files or using recovery options in Word may help, but if no recoverable file exists, the unsaved changes cannot be restored.

If the document was stored in OneDrive or SharePoint, check:

    • The recycle bin of the SharePoint or Teams site where it was stored, and
    • The OneDrive recycle bin for deleted files or previous versions.

If the document was local and Word or Windows crashed during save, look in the same folder for temporary or backup files created around the time of editing.
