One drive is not syncing due to space issues. How do I get it to resume syncing?

Hello, thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A.

May I please know how much free space is left in your OneDrive account?

Go to https://onedrive.live.com/?v=managestorage and sign in with your Microsoft account.

Check how much storage you have remaining.

If you want to free up some space, select Free up space (OneDrive).

    User's image

This will take you to a page that shows the large files stored in your OneDrive. If you want to keep these files in OneDrive, you can upgrade your storage. Otherwise, you can free up space in your account by deleting the large files. Ensure you delete those files from the OneDrive recycle bin folder as well.

To upgrade OneDrive, visit this link here-

To resume OneDrive syncing when space is the problem, free up local disk space and reduce what is synced to the device, then let OneDrive continue syncing.

    1. Free up working space on the computer
      • On Windows: use Start > Disk Clean-up to remove temporary files and other unneeded items.
      • On macOS: use Optimize Storage. This gives OneDrive enough local space to process and move files.
    2. Move or clean up files, then sync
      • Move the files that should be in OneDrive into the OneDrive folder after freeing some space.
      • If OneDrive shows a Disk full message, follow this sequence:
        1. Run Disk Clean-up/Optimize Storage.
        2. Move the files into the OneDrive folder.
        3. Click the OneDrive taskbar/menubar icon and go to Settings > Account > Choose folders and deselect folders that do not need to be synced locally.
        4. After sync completes, right-click large files/folders in the OneDrive folder and choose Clear space (this keeps them in the cloud but removes local copies).
        5. Empty the Recycle Bin/Trash.
    3. If sync is stuck on “Processing changes”
      • Temporarily pause and resume sync:
        1. Right-click the OneDrive cloud icon in the taskbar/menubar.
        2. Select Pause syncing and choose a time (2, 8, or 24 hours).
        3. After managing space, select the OneDrive icon again and choose Resume syncing.
      • If a specific file or folder never finishes syncing, check for:
        • Too many items or very large files.
        • Invalid characters or overly long paths.
        • Lack of local disk space.

Once enough local disk space is available and unnecessary folders are excluded from local sync, OneDrive should resume syncing automatically or after selecting Resume syncing from the OneDrive icon.
