I just installed Excel. The message said install was successful. I tried to open existing excel files and nothing happened, no error message. When selected the excel file the 'open' box did not darken and when I clicked it nothing happened.

    Hi!

Can you open Excel without opening it with a file? In the Start Menu, search for Excel and open it. If it opens normally, try creating a new file.

Did you purchase a Microsoft 365 or Office license?

Did you recently purchase the license, or do you already have an MS365/Office license?

Are you installing Office on a new computer?

Follow these steps in order, testing Excel after each step:

    1. Run a Quick Repair of Office
      1. Select the Start button.
      2. Type and choose "Control Panel."
      3. Choose Programs > Programs and Features.
      4. Select the Office/Microsoft 365 product that includes Excel, then choose Change.
      5. Choose Quick Repair, then Repair.
      6. When it finishes, try opening Excel directly from the Start menu, then open a file via File > Open.
    2. Reset the file association for Excel files
      1. Locate one of the Excel files that will not open.
      2. Right‑click the file and select Properties.
      3. On the General tab, check Type of file (for example, .xlsx) and the Opens with entry.
      4. Select Change.
      5. Select Excel (if needed, choose More apps to find it), check Always use this app, then select OK.
      6. Double‑click the file again to see if it opens.
    3. Manually set defaults via Control Panel
      1. Select the Start button.
      2. Type and choose "Control Panel."
      3. Select Programs > Default Programs.
      4. Choose Set a default for a file type or link type.
      5. Enter the Excel file extension (for example, .xlsx) and set Excel as the default app.
      6. Repeat for other Excel types if needed.
    4. If multiple Office versions are installed
      1. Open Control Panel > Programs > Uninstall a program.
      2. If older or duplicate Office versions appear, select the ones not needed and choose Uninstall.
      3. Restart the computer and test Excel again.

If none of these steps work, open Excel first from the Start menu, then use File > Open to browse to the workbook; this should still allow access to files even if double‑clicking is not working yet.
