Autoruns can integrate with Process Explorer: when an autostart entry is selected and the Process Explorer command is used, Autoruns tries to start or attach to Process Explorer. The dialog “Failed to launch or locate Process Explorer” appears when Autoruns cannot find or run procexp.exe.
To stop the message:
- Ensure
procexp.exeis present and runnable- Download Process Explorer from the official package if needed.
- Extract
procexp.exeand confirm it runs by double‑clicking it.
- Keep Autoruns and Process Explorer together
- Place
autoruns.exeandprocexp.exein the same folder. - Start Autoruns from that folder so it can locate Process Explorer when the menu item is used.
- Place
- Avoid invoking the Process Explorer integration
- Do not use the Process Explorer item in the Entry menu or toolbar in Autoruns if Process Explorer is not installed or not desired. The error only appears when that command is triggered.
With Process Explorer correctly installed and in the same directory, Autoruns will open it instead of showing the error.
