How do I get started on an old Surface Studio 2 computer that hasn't been used in years? All I get is the initial restart screen. How do I configure it and see if it operates?

Plug it into power and let it charge for at least 30–60 minutes before doing anything.

Press and hold the power button for 20–30 seconds to do a hard reset, then press it normally to boot.

Make sure the display cable (the magnetic connector between the base and screen) is seated properly.

If Windows is corrupted, then repair/reset.

    Reset or recover your Surface

To get started with a Surface Studio 2 that has been unused for years and is stuck at the initial screen, follow these steps in order:

    1. Basic power-on and setup
      1. Connect the Surface Studio 2 to power and turn it on.
      2. If Windows setup appears, plug the device in and follow the on-screen instructions to complete setup:
        • Choose language/region.
        • Sign in with or create a Microsoft account.
        • Optionally restore or transfer files from another PC.
        • Set up Windows Hello, turn on Find my device, and check for Windows updates.
      3. If setup completes, sign in and verify that the device operates normally.
    2. If it is stuck on a logo or initial restart screen If all that appears is a Microsoft logo or a startup screen that never progresses:
      1. Force a shutdown and restart
        • Press and hold the power button until the Surface shuts down and restarts and the Windows logo appears again (about 20 seconds), then release the power button.
        • If Windows starts, complete setup as above.
      2. If it still does not start Windows
        • Use a USB recovery drive to reset the device:
          1. Shut down the Surface Studio 2.
          2. Insert a USB recovery drive into a USB port.
          3. Press and hold the volume-down button while pressing and releasing the power button.
          4. When the Surface logo appears, release the volume-down button.
        • Follow the on-screen instructions to repair or reset Windows from the recovery environment.
    3. If Windows starts but the device seems outdated or unstable
      1. After signing in, connect to the internet.
      2. Run Windows Update to install the latest updates.
      3. Optionally, transfer or restore files from another PC using Windows Backup or file transfer tools.
    4. If startup still fails or hardware seems faulty
      • Go to the Surface Studio help & learning page for:
        • Startup failure guidance.
        • Driver and firmware downloads.
        • Service or repair options if the device still will not operate correctly.
