To get started with a Surface Studio 2 that has been unused for years and is stuck at the initial screen, follow these steps in order:
- Basic power-on and setup
- Connect the Surface Studio 2 to power and turn it on.
- If Windows setup appears, plug the device in and follow the on-screen instructions to complete setup:
- Choose language/region.
- Sign in with or create a Microsoft account.
- Optionally restore or transfer files from another PC.
- Set up Windows Hello, turn on Find my device, and check for Windows updates.
- If setup completes, sign in and verify that the device operates normally.
- If it is stuck on a logo or initial restart screen
If all that appears is a Microsoft logo or a startup screen that never progresses:
- Force a shutdown and restart
- Press and hold the power button until the Surface shuts down and restarts and the Windows logo appears again (about 20 seconds), then release the power button.
- If Windows starts, complete setup as above.
- If it still does not start Windows
- Use a USB recovery drive to reset the device:
- Shut down the Surface Studio 2.
- Insert a USB recovery drive into a USB port.
- Press and hold the volume-down button while pressing and releasing the power button.
- When the Surface logo appears, release the volume-down button.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to repair or reset Windows from the recovery environment.
- If Windows starts but the device seems outdated or unstable
- After signing in, connect to the internet.
- Run Windows Update to install the latest updates.
- Optionally, transfer or restore files from another PC using Windows Backup or file transfer tools.
- If startup still fails or hardware seems faulty
