Who's your email service provider? You need to reset your password directly via their website, not via the email app.

The IMAP password for an email account is managed by the email provider, not by Outlook. If the password is forgotten and there is no “Forgotten password” option in Outlook, it must be reset directly with the IMAP provider.

Use the appropriate method based on the type of account:

    1. For Outlook.com / Hotmail / Live accounts
      • Go to the Microsoft account password reset page: Reset a forgotten Microsoft account password.
      • Follow the steps:
        1. On the Microsoft account sign-in page, select Forgotten your password?
        2. Enter the account username and select Next.
        3. Verify identity using the available security options and complete the reset.
      • After resetting, update the password in new Outlook when prompted. If Outlook shows a message like “Please create an app password for Outlook on your email provider's site,” follow the provider’s instructions to generate an app password and use that in Outlook instead of the main password.
    2. For other providers (Gmail, Yahoo, iCloud, ISP IMAP, etc.)
      • Reset the password on the provider’s own website (for example, Gmail, Yahoo, iCloud, or the ISP’s mail portal). Many providers have a “Forgot password” or recovery option on their sign-in page.
      • If the provider requires an app password for IMAP access, generate it on the provider’s site and use that app password in Outlook when prompted.
    3. If using Exchange or a work/school IMAP account
      • Contact the organization’s IT administrator to reset the password or provide the correct credentials.

After the password is reset with the provider:

    1. Open new Outlook.
    2. When Outlook prompts to sign in or shows a password error, select Continue and enter the new password (or app password) to reauthenticate the account.

If the IMAP provider is unknown or there is no self-service reset option, contact the provider’s support to recover or reset the account password.
