Facial Recognition Quit Working

Facial Recognition worked fine and suddenly just quit. In settings it says "currently unavailable". I cannot remove it because there is no option for that. When I go into systems to remove it in Settings there is no "FaceDrive" file to delete. I have done troubleshooting on the camera and it seems to be fine. I use it frequently to ZOOM. Help!

Hello, thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A.

Try reinstalling the camera drivers once and see if you can enable Windows Hello Facial Recognition again:

    To do that,

    1. Open the Device Manager.
    2. Expand the arrow next to Cameras.
    3. Right-click your default camera driver, select Uninstall device, select the 'Attempt to remove the driver software for this device' checkbox, and click Uninstall.
    4. Once uninstalled, restart your computer and set up Windows Hello Facial recognition again.

    If that didn't work,

Check for Windows updates and download and install Optional updates as well.

(You can find the optional updates in Advanced options on the Windows updates page.)

If you are still having issues,

Type msinfo in the search bar on the taskbar and click Enter.

Post a screenshot of the resulting dialog box.

Check with Device Manager, if you've IR based webcam installed there and is working fine.

Use the PIN to sign in first, then repair Windows Hello Face from Settings and re-train it.

    1. Sign in with PIN or password.
    2. Open Start > Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.
    3. Under Facial recognition (Windows Hello) or Windows Hello Face:
      • If Improve recognition is available, select it and follow the on‑screen instructions to re‑scan the face. This adds another face template and often fixes recognition issues.
      • If Remove is available, select Remove, then select Set up and go through the face setup again.
    4. Make sure the camera is clean and unobstructed, and that lighting is even (no strong backlight or harsh light from one side). Remove hats or accessories that cast shadows over the face.
    5. If glasses, facial hair, or makeup have changed since the original setup, use Improve recognition after signing in so Windows Hello can learn the new appearance.
    6. If the issue persists, run the Windows Hello troubleshooter from the article on common issues and troubleshooting tips, and also confirm the camera still works in the Camera app and in other apps like Zoom.
    7. If the device is managed by work or school, an administrator policy (for example, enhanced anti‑spoofing or other sign‑in policies) can affect Windows Hello Face availability; in that case, contact the administrator.
    8. If none of the above resolves it and the camera continues to work in other apps, there may be a hardware or firmware issue specific to Windows Hello; contact the device manufacturer for further diagnostics.
