Activation Code Issues

I'm using parallels on my MacBook Pro and I'm having issues with the activation code. My company purchased the Windows 11 software and sent me the activation code, however when I try to activate the account using the "change activation code" method it states that "Some of these characters can't be found in the product key." I'm able to sign into my Windows account but it still states that I need to activate the software. Am I able to do so in parallels, if so why isn't the code working?

That error usually indicates one or more characters in the product key is incorrect, these are the characters that cannot appear in a Windows product key.

    Letters: A, E, I, L, N, O, S, U, and Z

    Numbers: 0, 1, and 5

If any of those characters appear in the product key you were provided, you will need to contact your company to get the correct product key.

Yes, Windows 11 can be activated when running in Parallels on a MacBook Pro, but the product key must be valid and correctly formatted for the edition installed in that virtual machine.

    Key points and checks:

    1. Product key format
    • A Windows product key must be exactly 25 characters in the format:
      • XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
    • The error “Some of these characters can't be found in the product key” usually means:
      • Extra characters, missing characters, or wrong characters are being entered, or
      • Non‑supported characters (such as spaces, dashes in the wrong place, or letters that don’t exist in keys) are included.
    • Ensure the key is typed exactly as provided, with only letters and numbers, and grouped correctly.
    1. Match key to Windows edition
    • If the company purchased a key for a different edition (for example, Windows 11 Pro or Enterprise) than what is installed in Parallels (for example, Windows 11 Home), activation can fail.
    • Some activation errors occur when an Enterprise key is used on Home/Pro, or when a key for one edition is used on another. In that case, a product key that matches the installed edition is required.
    1. Try entering the key again via Activation settings
    1. In the Windows VM, select Start > Settings > System > Activation.
    2. Select Change product key and carefully re‑enter the 25‑character key.
    3. Confirm there are no characters outside A–Z and 0–9 and that the length is exactly 25 characters.
    1. If activation still fails
    • If the key is not accepted or is reported as invalid or incompatible, the key may not be valid for this installation, may be for a different edition, or may be a volume/enterprise key that requires corporate activation.
    • In that case, contact the company’s IT or licensing contact to:
      • Confirm the exact Windows 11 edition purchased.
      • Confirm that the key is intended for use in a virtual machine.
      • Obtain a replacement key if the current one is invalid or for the wrong edition.

If a valid product key that matches the installed edition is used and is entered in the correct 25‑character format, Windows 11 in Parallels can be activated normally.
