For Surface Pro 8, Touch Display (Setup) and Calibration must run successfully before and after replacing the Touch Display Module (TDM). When SDT Touch Display Setup/Repair fails with an exception, follow the documented SDT prerequisites and log collection steps.
- Ensure software prerequisites
- Use Windows Update to install the latest OS and firmware for the Surface Pro 8.
- Confirm the device can boot fully into a Windows user account (no Safe Mode or recovery environment).
- Sign in with an account that is a local administrator on the device.
- Unblock and rerun SDT Touch Display (Setup)
- Copy the entire SDT folder from the USB drive to
C:\Users\\<local-admin>\\.
- Open PowerShell as Administrator.
- In PowerShell, navigate to the copied SDT folder and run:
Unblock-File *
- Close PowerShell.
- From Windows Explorer, run the SDT executable from the copied folder.
- In SDT, choose Repair → Repair Setup and Validation → Touch Display (Setup) and let it complete. If prompted, allow the device to shut down.
- If Touch Display (Setup) still fails
- Note the error shown in SDT and close SDT.
- SDT will create a TDM calibration log file in the
logfiles subfolder inside the SDT folder.
- Use this log file when escalating the issue to Microsoft Partner Device Desk or Surface support for further analysis.
- After successful display replacement on Surface Pro 8
- Power on the device.
- From Windows Explorer, run SDT again from USB or the local folder.
- Select Repair setup and validation → Touch Display Calibration and accept the restart prompt when the tool finishes.
- If calibration fails repeatedly, the new TDM may be faulty and should be replaced.
These steps align with the required SDT workflow for TDM replacement and with the official SDT troubleshooting guidance for Touch Display Setup failures.
