A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
If the Microsoft Authenticator entry for the account is missing and a verification code is required to sign in, the account must be recovered or the MFA registration reset using the supported recovery paths.
Use the appropriate option based on what is available:
- If the missing account is a personal Microsoft account (MSA) and the issue is the verification code not arriving:
- Go through the verification-code troubleshooting steps:
- Confirm the code is being sent to a valid security method (primary alias or added verification method) as described in "I'm not getting my Microsoft account verification code".
- Check junk mail for messages from
@accountprotection.microsoft.com. - Avoid repeated requests that can cause temporary blocking.
- If using another Microsoft account as the alternate email, follow the private-browsing steps to stay signed in to both accounts.
- If none of the methods work or you no longer have access to the security info, follow the "I've lost access to my Microsoft account security info" flow:
- Start sign-in to the Microsoft account.
- At the Verify your identity prompt, select I don't have any of these.
- Follow the instructions to replace security info.
- If all security info is replaced, expect a 30‑day wait before full sign-in is allowed.
- If the password is also not known and no security info is accessible, complete the account recovery form using the guidance in Help with the Microsoft account recovery form.
- Go through the verification-code troubleshooting steps:
- If the missing account is a work or school account where Authenticator was the only MFA method and there is another admin:
- Ask an administrator to reset MFA so the account can be re-registered:
- Admin signs in to Azure portal → Microsoft Entra ID → Users → select the affected user → Authentication methods → Require re-register multifactor authentication.
- Next sign-in will prompt for MFA registration again, allowing Authenticator to be added back.
- Ask an administrator to reset MFA so the account can be re-registered:
- If the missing account is a work or school account and there is no other admin / only global admin is locked out:
- A Data Protection / Tenant Recovery process is required. This cannot be done from the app itself.
- Call Microsoft’s customer support using the regional Customer service phone numbers and request escalation to the Data Protection team to reset MFA for the tenant admin, explaining that:
- The phone with Authenticator (or the Authenticator configuration) is lost.
- Authenticator was the only MFA method.
- The admin cannot access any portal to open a ticket.
- If reaching a live agent is difficult, one documented workaround is to create a temporary new tenant (for example via a trial subscription), use that tenant’s admin center to open a support ticket, and ask support to involve the Data Protection team for the original tenant.
- If the problem is specifically that Authenticator backup cannot be restored:
- If the backup account for Authenticator itself is inaccessible, support cannot restore Authenticator data. In that case, accounts must be re-added manually after MFA/security info is reset using the methods above.
If none of the above paths are possible and no security info or admin path exists, the only remaining option is to complete the Microsoft account recovery form and/or work with Microsoft Support as described until ownership can be verified and MFA reset.
