Windows Defender (Antimalware Service Executable) hogging high CPU for hours

My computer fans have been spinning at max speed for the last two days. When I check Task Manager, a process called "Antimalware Service Executable" is constantly using 40-60% of my CPU. I know it's the built-in Windows Defender, but it's making my games lag like crazy. It doesn't seem to be running an active scan; it's just stuck hogging resources. How do I tone it down?

    Hi Cooper Turner,

The Antimalware Service Executable process causing sustained high CPU usage is typically caused by Windows Defender scanning its own installation directory or hitting a continuous loop while monitoring active game files. Since you notice this loop specifically dragging down your gaming performance, the most permanent solution is to add a process and folder exclusion to the security agent. Open Windows Security => click on Virus & threat protection =>go to Manage settings under the protection settings header=>select Add or remove exclusions and add the folder path C:\Program Files\Windows Defender, along with the specific main folder where your games are installed.

This background resource hogging can occur if Windows Task Scheduler is triggered to run a daily scan with unrestricted CPU access. You can tone this down by opening Task Scheduler, navigating to the Microsoft\Windows\Windows Defender folder, opening the Windows Defender Scheduled Scan properties & under the Conditions tab, making sure it is set to run only when the computer is completely idle.

If adding these target exclusions stabilizes your CPU usage and stops the in game lagging, please click "Accept Answer" so other community members running into this high resource consumption can find this workaround.

    Tracy.
