Follow these steps to restore the missing HID-compliant touch screen driver and get touch working again:

    1. Open Device Manager
      1. Right-click the Start menu and select Device Manager.
      2. In Device Manager, select the arrow next to Human Interface Devices to expand it.
    2. Check if the device is only disabled
      1. Under Human Interface Devices, look for HID-compliant touch screen.
      2. If it is present but disabled, right-click it and select Enable device.
      3. If there are multiple HID-compliant touch screen entries, repeat for each.
    3. Reinstall the touchscreen driver (Surface and similar devices) If using a Surface or a similar Windows device and touch still does not work, reinstall the driver:
      1. In Device Manager, expand Human Interface Devices.
      2. If present, right-click Intel(R) Precise Touch Device, select Uninstall device, then confirm Uninstall.
      3. Right-click HID-compliant touch screen, select Uninstall device, then Uninstall. If there are two HID-compliant touch screen entries, uninstall both.
      4. In the Action menu, select Scan for hardware changes.
      5. If needed, restart the PC. When connected to the internet, Windows will automatically download and install the touchscreen driver.
    4. Manually install touch drivers if they are missing If HID-compliant touch screen or Surface Touch firmware does not appear at all in Device Manager, manually install the drivers for the device model:
      1. Download and install the drivers and firmware specific to the device and Windows version. For Surface devices, see Download drivers and firmware for Surface.
      2. After installation, open Device Manager again and confirm that HID-compliant touch screen appears under Human Interface Devices.
    5. If touch still does not work
      1. For Surface devices, boot to UEFI to test whether the issue is hardware or software:
        • Shut down the device.
        • Press and hold the Volume up button and press the Power button until the logo appears.
        • In UEFI, try touching the screen to see if it responds.
        • If touch does not work in UEFI, the touchscreen likely has a hardware failure and needs servicing.
        • If touch works in UEFI, exit and restart Windows, then repeat the driver reinstall steps.

Disabling or enabling touch If the goal is simply to toggle touch on or off once the driver is back:

    1. In Device Manager, under Human Interface Devices, right-click HID-compliant touch screen.
    2. Select Disable device to turn touch off, or Enable device to turn it on.
