Hi, I'm John! I will help you with this.

To help narrow down the issue:

    1. Did you purchase the subscription directly from Microsoft or from a third-party retailer?
    2. Also, is your current Family subscription still active right now?

You can switch from Microsoft 365 Family to Microsoft 365 Personal (Single), but it depends on the timing.

Here’s the easiest way to do it:

    • Sign in to https://account.microsoft.com/services
    • Find your Microsoft 365 Family subscription and select Manage
    • Turn recurring billing off so it doesn’t auto-renew
    • Once the current plan expires, you can then purchase Microsoft 365 Personal and use the same Microsoft account

If renewal is happening now and you’re being blocked from switching, that’s normal, Microsoft doesn’t allow mid-cycle plan downgrades. The change becomes available after the Family plan ends.

I really hope this information is helpful! Let me know if you have any further questions or concerns.

To switch from Microsoft 365 Family to Microsoft 365 Personal (single user), use the same Microsoft account and change your subscription plan.

    1. Go to the Microsoft account Services & subscriptions page: https://account.microsoft.com/services and sign in with the account that currently has Microsoft 365 Family.
    2. Find the Microsoft 365 Family subscription in the list and select Manage.
    3. If you see an option such as Change or Switch under billing or plan options, choose it and select Microsoft 365 Personal as the new plan, then follow the prompts to confirm.
    4. If there is no direct switch option, cancel Microsoft 365 Family first:
      • On the same Manage page, select Cancel subscription and follow the prompts.
      • Review what you will lose and confirm the cancellation.
      • After the subscription is canceled and expires, purchase Microsoft 365 Personal using the same Microsoft account so remaining data (OneDrive, email, etc.) stays with that account.

When switching between Microsoft 365 home subscriptions (Personal, Family, Premium, Basic), remaining time on the old subscription is typically adjusted and added to the new one when upgrading or changing plans. For Family → Personal, the switch updates the benefits to single‑user access.

If the subscription was purchased through a third‑party store (Apple App Store, Google Play, or a retail partner), subscription changes (including switching plans) must be managed through that provider. In that case, go to https://account.microsoft.com/services, select Manage next to the subscription, and follow the link or instructions to manage it with the billing partner.
