Hello, thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A.

Method 1: Reinstall the Camera Drivers.

    Open the Device Manager.

Expand the arrow next to Cameras.

Right-click your default camera driver, select 'Uninstall device', select 'Attempt to remove the driver software for this device check box, and then click Uninstall.

Once uninstalled, restart your computer and check if it works.

If you are still having issues,

Method 2: install the Drivers from your Device Manufacturer's website.

Visit your PC manufacturer's website. (Asus/Dell/HP/Lenovo/etc...)

Select your device Model > Go to Drivers & download section > Download the latest Camera drivers for your device model and then install it.

    Restart your computer.

Let me know if you still need more help.

Follow these steps to address a built‑in camera that randomly blacks out and only works briefly after troubleshooting:

    1. Update the camera driver
      1. Select Start > Device Manager.
      2. Expand Cameras.
      3. Right‑click the built‑in camera and select Update driver.
      4. Select Search automatically for drivers so Windows can find and install the latest driver.
      5. Restart the PC after the update completes.
    2. Check for Windows updates (including optional driver updates)
      1. Select Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.
      2. If available, install all updates.
      3. If offered, go to Advanced options > Optional updates and install any camera or imaging‑device driver updates.
      4. Restart the PC.
    3. Test the camera in the built‑in Camera app
      1. Open Start > Camera.
      2. If the preview works reliably here but fails in another app, adjust that app’s camera settings (for example, in Teams/Zoom select the correct camera and disable any conflicting virtual camera tools).
    4. Roll back the camera driver if the issue started after an update
      1. Open Device Manager and right‑click the camera > Properties.
      2. On the Driver tab, select Roll Back Driver (if available) and confirm.
      3. Restart the PC and test the camera again.
    5. Reinstall the camera driver
      1. In Device Manager, right‑click the camera > Properties.
      2. Go to the Driver tab and select Uninstall Device.
      3. Check Attempt to remove the driver for this device (or Delete the driver software for this device) if shown, then select OK.
      4. In Device Manager, open the Action menu and select Scan for hardware changes.
      5. Wait for Windows to reinstall the camera, then restart the PC and test in the Camera app.
    6. Switch to the in‑box UVC driver (for USB/UVC‑based webcams) If the built‑in camera appears as a USB/UVC device and still behaves inconsistently:
      1. Open Device Manager and locate the camera under Cameras or Imaging devices.
      2. Right‑click it and select Update driver.
      3. Select Browse my computer for drivers.
      4. Select Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer.
      5. Choose USB Video Device and select Next.
      6. Close the wizard, then restart and test.
    7. If the problem persists If the camera continues to black out after these steps, the issue may be hardware‑related. In that case, check the laptop manufacturer’s support site for a specific camera driver or diagnostics, or contact their support.
