For a touchpad that stopped working after installing Windows 11 and shows an I2C HID device error, use these steps:

    1. Update the touchpad driver
      1. Open Settings > Windows Update and install all available updates, including optional driver updates. This is the recommended way to get the correct touchpad/I2C HID drivers.
      2. If the touchpad still does not work, open Device Manager (press Win + X > Device Manager).
        • Look under Human Interface Devices and Mice and other pointing devices for entries like HID-compliant touch pad, I2C HID Device, or similar.
        • Right-click the device and select Update driver and follow the prompts.
    2. Reinstall the touchpad / I2C HID device
      1. In Device Manager, under Human Interface Devices or Mice and other pointing devices, right-click the touchpad or I2C HID Device that shows an error.
      2. Select Uninstall device and confirm.
      3. Restart the PC so Windows can reinstall the driver automatically from Windows Update.
    3. If the device is missing or still shows an error
      • If the I2C HID Device or touchpad is missing from Device Manager, or still shows a persistent error after driver update/reinstall, this can indicate a firmware/ACPI configuration problem with the HID over I2C device.
      • In that case, contact the laptop/device manufacturer’s support so they can check BIOS/firmware, HID over I2C firmware, and provide the correct driver or firmware update.

If updating and reinstalling the driver does not restore the touchpad, manufacturer support is the next step.

The best option would be to go to the support page for your laptop on the manufacturers website, then from there, download and manually reinstall (not update) the version of touchpad drivers they provide for your laptop model.

If you have any difficulty locating that support page, click your Start Button, then just type msinfo and press Enter, please provide a screenshot of the resulting System Information window.
