For a touchpad that stopped working after installing Windows 11 and shows an I2C HID device error, use these steps:
- Update the touchpad driver
- Open Settings > Windows Update and install all available updates, including optional driver updates. This is the recommended way to get the correct touchpad/I2C HID drivers.
- If the touchpad still does not work, open Device Manager (press
Win + X> Device Manager).- Look under Human Interface Devices and Mice and other pointing devices for entries like HID-compliant touch pad, I2C HID Device, or similar.
- Right-click the device and select Update driver and follow the prompts.
- Reinstall the touchpad / I2C HID device
- In Device Manager, under Human Interface Devices or Mice and other pointing devices, right-click the touchpad or I2C HID Device that shows an error.
- Select Uninstall device and confirm.
- Restart the PC so Windows can reinstall the driver automatically from Windows Update.
- If the device is missing or still shows an error
- If the I2C HID Device or touchpad is missing from Device Manager, or still shows a persistent error after driver update/reinstall, this can indicate a firmware/ACPI configuration problem with the HID over I2C device.
- In that case, contact the laptop/device manufacturer’s support so they can check BIOS/firmware, HID over I2C firmware, and provide the correct driver or firmware update.
If updating and reinstalling the driver does not restore the touchpad, manufacturer support is the next step.
