Using Windows 11, Excel spreadsheet with multiple tabs; in the process of renaming a tab, Windows told me I already had a tab named the same. In correcting the new tab, the rename box disappeared and now I cannot access any of the tabs in the Workbook as the box identifying issues comes up lastly stating that the tab must not be left blank.User's image

Hello Merle Ward,

It sounds like Excel is still stuck in the sheet rename/edit state after the duplicate-name warning.

Try this first:

  • press Esc a few times to cancel the unfinished rename operation,
  • then right-click the worksheet tab and choose Rename again,
  • give it a completely different temporary name first (for example Sheet_Test_1).

Excel sheet names also:

  • cannot be blank,
  • cannot duplicate another sheet name in the workbook,
  • and cannot contain characters like \ / * ? : [ ].

If Excel still says the name already exists, there may be a hidden worksheet using that name already. In that case:

  • right-click any visible sheet tab,
  • choose Unhide,
  • and check for another sheet with the same name.

If the workbook remains stuck even after pressing Esc, close Excel without saving and reopen the workbook to clear the unfinished rename state.
